Deborah Hines.

1966 - 2020

Started: 02 Dec 2020
Created by: Dunstan Brown

Deborah Hines passed away in St Leonard’s Hospice, on the 30th November this year. Despite her long illness Deborah, continued to work effectively until only a couple of weeks before her death, carrying out the job to which she was dedicated. She headed the Department of Language & Linguistic Science’s administration team as Department Manager, a role she performed with extraordinarily good judgement, and kindness to staff and students. Deborah was loved and respected by everyone. Her advice and guidance were invaluable – her loss will be keenly felt. Deborah studied Classics at Churchill College, Cambridge. After Cambridge, she lived in London and worked at the Metal Exchange in the City. She moved north to work at Sheffield British Glass Recycling, after which she joined the University of Sheffield as administrator in the Department of Human Communication Sciences. When she moved to the University of York she was Department Administrator for the Department of Chemistry, and finally she was appointed Department Manager for the Department of Language & Linguistic Science. In recent months Deborah kept in frequent contact with colleagues and friends, by phone, FaceTime and Zoom. Her humour never deserted her; and because some of us could see her in her hospice room, sometimes catching moments of conversation between her and the staff, we know how beautifully she was cared for. The hospice staff did everything possible to encourage Deborah, to support her morale and to make her as comfortable as was possible in the circumstances. They ensured that Deborah was in control of her life, to the end, and that she was able to endure everything with dignity. This page is dedicated to donations in gratitude for her care at St Leonard’s, and especially in tribute to Deborah’s memory.

Everyone is calling her Deborah in their messages, but I knew her as Deb, or even Little Deb. I've not seen her in years so this news has shocked me. I know how she could be tough in adverse circumstances, and find humour in the darkest of situations. She crackled with life, I find it hard to imagine the world without her.

Donation by David Hopkin

What a larger-than-life person! Deborah was always ready to see the funnier side of things, and to bring no small amount of intelligence, common sense and perspective to any situation in the workplace. Thank you for that Deborah. I am pretty certain that, despite her illness and travails, she would have told us all to keep smiling.

Such a sad loss. Like many others, I have memories of a very intelligent, perceptive and funny lady. Rest in peace.

Donation by Martin Aiton

I had some wonderful chats with Deborah where we would muse about the old Classics with me speaking as an Oxonian and her as an old member of a formerly all-male Cambridge college. She also assisted me in my application for departmental travel grants in 2015 for which I am very grateful. She was a wonderful presence in our department always making sure that everything was in place, a terrific colleague who would often work late and be the last to leave our building, and a fantastic soul who now rests in eternal peace under God's embrace. Thank you Deborah for all that you have done for us. You will be much missed.

Donation by Keith Tse

£25.00

Thank you Deborah for being the most wonderful colleague and friend. You made the Department the happy and well-functioning institution that it is. You had patience and a wicked sense of humour. And you had a natural authority, gained by your good judgement. But it's the fun and the banter that I'll remember especially. Thank you, again, Deborah.

Donation by Paul Kerswill

£50.00

I was stunned and deeply saddened to hear that Debs has passed away. She fought so long and so hard but always spoke frankly and openly about the cancer and how things would end. I will remember many lively fishy Fridays in Vanbrugh restaurant over the years! She was witty, amusing, and highly intelligent with a very down to earth sense of humour and it was always fun. Her chuckle would spread across the huge dining room and so many people would nod and wave as they passed. She had great energy and enthusiasm, and loved the University, her department and her job. I wish I'd made time for one more cup of tea with her because one day 'tomorrow' won't come. Thoughts are with her family at this dreadful time.

Thanks so much to the Hospice staff for ensuring Deborah's end of life was as dignified and comfortable as possible. We always knew that Deborah would succeed at whatever she chose to do. However it is her legacy of kindness and humour that we are proudest of her for. It is obvious from the tributes here that she has had a positive effect on the lives of many. She will be sorely missed by us all. Rest in Peace. Uncle Richard and Aunt Helen.

Deborah was one of my very best friends at secondary school in Loughborough. Although we lost touch following graduation I have many fond memories of our teenage years; including waitressing at wedding receptions, working in her grandma's cafe and starting our very first chip pan fire! She was a clever, fun-loving, kind person with a fantastic wardrobe from which I'd often borrow items (it was the eighties after all!) From the tributes left here it sounds like she hadn't changed at all and she left a big impression on so many. My condolences to her family and all her friends. RIP Debs xxx

I first met Deborah when I was external examiner in Linguistics at York and we got on like a house on fire. We both shared a determination to create a slick system that was as efficient as it was fair. I saw her for the last time in early December last year and was delighted to see the twinkle still in her eye even though she had already been through so much. Karen x

Deb, you were an inspiration, dealing with your illness with dignity, bravery and positivity, keeping your smile and great sense of humour right to the end. You were an amazing woman and friend and I have hilarious memories of our adventures together, which I could never have had with anyone else. When we first met, your sharp wit had us laughing for hours. You loved life and I am so sorry that it was taken from you too soon. You are constantly in my thoughts and I, and all who knew you, will miss your lively, fun and generous spirit terribly. Suz x

I first encountered Deborah at the Administrators' Forum when she was departmental manager in Chemistry and was struck by her obvious intelligence and her distinctive voice. When she moved to L&LS we came into contact occasionally and she was always warm and funny. I regret that I never got to know her well - she was clearly an amazing woman.

Donation by Helen Jacobs

Deborah was a wonderful friend as well as an excellent department manager. I was close to her at the start of her illness and so was able to appreciate first hand her amazing response to the tough diagnosis and the treatment that followed; her unstoppable humour kept both herself and the rest of us going over that time. I knew she was dying - though I have since moved far away - but it still came as a shock to hear the news this week; she remains such a vital presence in my mind. I am very grateful to the Hospice for making her last days more bearable.

In memory of Deborah. Deb, you had a profound influence on me, both professionally (as, first my manager, then my mentor/cheerleader as I moved into management myself) and personally — the perfect compadre to watch an obscure film with at City Screen, followed by a bottle (or two) of red and many a cackle... Your fierce intellect and striking vision were extraordinary. You displayed fearlessness in the face of difficult decisions and significant challenges and the department was at the heart of everything you did. I had huge respect for you and how your mind worked and admiration for how you balanced a seriousness for your career with the most wicked sense of humour and social proclivity. All of us who had the privilege of knowing you sorely feel your loss and I send my love and condolences to Will and family.
