Government Funding for Hospices

We were pleased to hear the announcement last night (8.4.20) about the financial help from the government of £200m for Hospices. St Leonard's Hospice is in a good financial position relative to some other hospices who are facing possible closure, however shutting our 14 shops and postponing or cancelling fundraising events presents an immediate and significant impact on our income.

Hospices have always provided a vital service within the local community but we are needed now more than ever as we adapt our services and work collaboratively with our NHS partners and colleagues to respond to a significant increase in demand. We are able to care for patients who would normally be cared for in hospital, both at the Hospice on Tadcaster Road and in their own homes with our Hospice@Home service. This releases NHS resources to support the fight against COVID-19.

At this stage we do not know how the money will be allocated across hospices in the UK. With 150 adult hospices and over 50 children’s hospices we do not know what our share will look like, but it will not make up for the loss of our voluntary income.
